Old age is not a disease; it can be the best stage of their life!
Have you noticed your pet seems a little slower getting around? Less eager to play, or not always there to greet you at the door when you come home? Your pet may now be entering their “Golden Years" and with that, changes are occurring within his/her body. These changes are not merely old age, but may in fact be symptoms of treatable conditions. With diagnosis and therapeutic care your pet’s quality of life can be improved. You know your pet better than anyone, so your input on alterations in his/her life to our veterinary staff can give valuable clues to recognize these variations in your pet’s day to day lifestyle.
Our companion animals age at a rate of five to seven years for each one of ours. This means health problems in your pet can progress five to seven times faster than in people. Biannual physical exams and yearly routine lab work can help catch these problems in their earliest stages. Recommendations for yearly health screens may include complete blood count, serum chemistry profile, a complete urinalysis, arthritis screening, fecal exam, blood pressure, and or/an electrocardiogram. An exam is the perfect time to discuss your options in how to approach your pet’s next stage of life and to decide on an appropriate exam protocol for him/her.
We at Lakota Hills Animal Clinic feel that we are advocates for each of our patients, striving to set the “Gold Standard” in medical care for all your companions. Our doctors agree that a physical exam every six months accompanied with yearly health screens for our senior patients are in accordance with the most up to date practices in veterinary medicine today. Your pet’s health needs will dictate the best course of action regarding diet, exercise, diagnostics and medications. We look forward to helping make your pet’s golden years as happy and healthy as we can.
